Mohandas K. Gandhi was initially of British nationality. At the time of his birth in 1869, India was under the rule of the British Empire. However, on August 15, 1947, India gained its independence from the British Empire with the establishment of the Dominion of India. With this change in government, Gandhi’s nationality was transferred under the Dominion of India.
