1 Chronicles Chapter 1

In 1 Chronicles Chapter 1, the authors (who are believed to be Nehemiah and Ezra) present a list of names starting from the first man, Adam, all the way to the leaders of Edom. The main purpose of this chapter was to speak to all of the exiles who were God’s people.

Connecting to Family Trees

Because these people had been exiled from their homeland, it was important for them to reestablish their roots with Israel. As a result, the writers of 1 Chronicles Chapter 1 attempted to connect them with their family trees.

The people registered on this roll were all ancestors of Israel. No other sons and families were recorded since they all died in the flood. There are 10 names listed from Noah to Adam. This list is duplicated in Genesis chapter 5.

The Sons of Noah

The sons of Noah are identified from the oldest to the youngest as Shem, Ham, and Japheth. These three men were considered the start of the world following the flood. The sons and their wives, along with Noah and his wife, were the only survivors of the great flood, according to the Scripture.

When exploring this family unit beginning with the Shem, Israel and Abraham were in his line of descendants. From Japheth came the people of northern Asia and Europe. From Ham’s four sons, the southern area of Asia and Africa blossomed.

Abraham’s Offspring

Abraham had three sons produced by three different women – Sara, Hagar, and Keturah. Two of these sons were Isaac and Ishmael. Isaac, in turn, had two sons of his own, Jacob and Esau. The Lord renamed Jacob to Israel. The Arab nations were spawned from Ishmael and the Jews originated from the line of Isaac.

Esau’s Family

1 Chronicles Chapter 1 ends with the story of Esau (also known as Edom), who had five sons. Each of them had their own sons and the entire clan relocated to the city of Seir, which is just east of the Red Sea. Therefore the native people of Seir combined with the offspring of Esau to form the nation of Edom.
