In Matthew 1 the reader learns about the birth of Jesus. Jesus, who is also known as Christ, was a descendant of three sets of fourteen generations stemming from Abraham to David. In the text, Matthew describes the extensive genealogy of Jesus.

Jesus’ Birth

Jesus’ parents Mary and Joseph were set to have an arranged marriage, but before they could get married Mary found out she was pregnant with the Holy Spirit. This was considered a miracle as she was a virgin at the time. Joseph believed that he and Mary should quietly get a divorce to ensure that her name was not ruined.

One night an angel came to Joseph saying that he should take Mary as his wife as she was carrying the Holy Spirit within her. The angel told Joseph that Mary would give birth to Jesus and that their son would free people from their sins. Jesus’ coming was set to fulfill what the Lord had foretold through the prophets. The angel said that the child will be called Immanuel, which means “God With Us.” Joseph listened to the angel and wed Mary. Shortly thereafter she gave birth to Jesus.

1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
