In John Chapter 16, Jesus speaks to his disciples about, among other things, His return to the Father, which He knows will happen soon. His disciples are puzzled because at one point, Jesus says that in a little while they will not see Him again. He has, in fact, been preparing His disciples for His departure for some time. In this chapter, they are still at the Passover meal (or the Last Supper) and Judas Iscariot has left to betray Jesus.

Puzzling Words from Jesus

The disciples are still upset over Jesus’ prediction that one of them will betray Him. They do not know where Judas went and Peter is especially dismayed to have heard Jesus’ prediction that he will deny knowing him before the cock crows thrice. As the disciples puzzle over His words, He tells them not to inquire among themselves. Though they will suffer and the world will rejoice even in their suffering, they will soon enough know joy when Jesus returns and no man will take their joy from them.

Asking in Jesus’ Name

Jesus went on to tell His disciples that if they ask for something from the Father in His name, it will be given to them. This is because the Father loves the disciples as they loved Jesus and understood that He was indeed sent by God.

Future of the Disciples

Jesus also admits in John Chapter 16 that He does address His disciples in proverbs. Later in the chapter, they exhort Him to speak no more in proverbs but to speak to them in plain speech. They also reaffirm their belief that Jesus came from God. He asks them if they believe, and then tells them that the hour has come. Jesus warns the disciples that they will now be scattered all over the world and they will leave Jesus on His own. But He tells them He is not alone because God the Father is with Him. He reiterates that some tribulation is ahead for the disciples, but He also tells them to be happy and not despair, since He has overcome the world.

1 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.
2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.
3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
4 But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?
6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.
30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
