William Holman Hunt (1827 – 1910) was an English painter and one of the primary founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848. His paintings are extremely detailed with vibrant colors. Hunt was a religious individual and made a handful of trips to the Middle East in order to study its landscape for his religious paintings. He received quite a bit of criticism early in his career, however, later in life his paintings became very popular. In 1905 he was awarded the Order of Merit.
