In a book entitled Croatia and Croatians and the Lost Colony 1585-1590 by Nenad N. Bach it was suggested by the author that CROATAN referred to Croatians who were at that time part of the Turkish Empire and known to have been involved in ship building. Many of these ships were made for the Turkish Navy but also quite a few were made for the Spanish Navy. Spain and England were at war with one another during this time and the Spanish Armada attacked England unsuccessfully in 1588.i It might not be possible to state with certainty that Croatians or Croatans were somehow involved in the disappearance of the Roanoke Colony but it definitely encourages more investigation into the circumstances advanced in this book that hit the shelves in 2003.
