In 1533, shortly before his death, the Medici Pope Clement VII commissioned Michelangelo — his childhood friend — to paint “the resurrection of the dead” behind the altar of the Sistine Chapel. Clement did not ask for “The Resurrection of Jesus Christ.” “The Last Judgment” is the original concept.
