The Italian Renaissance painter Raphael painted Saint Catherine of Alexandria in 1507 shortly after he arrived in Florence. The painting shows the portrait of Saint Catherine who is looking upward in ecstacy and is leaning on the wheel. It is believed that the graceful pose of Catherine in the portrait was inspired by the works of Leonardo Da Vinci. However, the portrayal of religious passion in the painting resembles the works of the painter Pietro Perugino.
The masterpiece is available for viewing at the National Gallery in London. It was used as the album cover of The Smashing Pumpkins album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
