Matthias Grünewald (1470 – 1528) was a German Renaissance artist who was most well known for painting religious scenes and altarpieces. His most famous work is the Isenheim Altarpiece. It is very likely that Grünewald inspired the artist Albrecht Dürer. Unfortunately, many of his masterpieces have not survived through the centuries, only ten paintings and thirty-five drawings are known to exist today.
