Mark George Tobey (December 11, 1890 – April 24, 1976) was an American painter, recognized throughout the U.S and in Europe. He is regarded as one of the “mystical painters of the Northwest.” He was one of the founders of the Northwest School, alongside William Cumming, Morris Graves, Kenneth Callahan, and Guy Anderson. His compositions were commonly influenced by Abstract expressionism and Asian calligraphy. Despite the similarities, his philosophical motivations for painting are different from most Abstract Expressionist painters. Learn more »
