Ma Jolie, one of his popular works shows an analysis of the visual elements of the subject. Each element of the painting is shown in a flattened, geometric area. Ma Jolie was derived from the famous song that was often played at a Parisian Music Hall Picasso frequently visited. The painting is a perfect blend of language, symbolic meaning and near abstraction.
The painting also represents the traditional portrait of the artist’s beloved, Marcella Humbert. Marcella Humbert was also called Ma Jolie by Picasso. When closely observed, the painting represents a lady holding a guitar.
