Katsushika Hokusai (1760 – 1849) was a Japanese artist who specialized in ukiyo-e painting and printmaking during the Edo Period. His most famous woodblock print series is the Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji (1831), which includes The Great Wave off Kanagawa, his most iconic piece of art. Hokusai is considered to be one of the greatest artists in art history. He created about 30,000 works of art during his lifetime and inspired many European artists, including Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh.
