Helen Frankenthaler (1928 -2011) was an American Abstract Expressionist and Color Field painter who was best known for her large, colorful oil paintings. She worked successfully for six decades and is credited for the artistic shift towards Color Field painting. Frankenthaler first began showing her work professionally in 1950 and about a decade later she was regularly attending major exhibitions worldwide. Through her friend, art critic Clement Greenberg, Frankenthaler had the opportunity to study with the famous Hans Hoffman. She also admired the work of Jackson Pollock. Frankenthaler’s home and studio were located in Connecticut and in 2001 she was awarded the National Medal of Arts.
