Edwin Parker “Cy” Twombly, Jr. (April 25, 1928 – July 5, 2011) was an American artist who became famous for his freely scribbled, large-scale, calligraphic-style graffiti paintings on solid fields of mostly off-white, tan, or gray colors. Twombly used the nickname “Cy” after his father, who was pitched in Major League Baseball for a short time, and another baseball pitcher, Cy Young. Twombly’s paintings often integrate painting and drawing. His paintings were exhibited worldwide. Learn more »
