I was six years old and happened to be in the center of this horrific bombardment in Hamburg--made it just in time into an underground bunker located in a park nearby with my mother and elderly grandmother--saw the flames and dead bodies all around me. One could say this was the beginning of my life--it started with a bang so to speak. The hate towards the Germans followed me all my life. There were many who showed love and gave support. Later during my school years I was lucky to have had good teachers. One of them, Elisabeth Fluegge, taught us to stand up against evil (she had the courage to bring several of her Jewish students into safety during the Nazi era). Her good spirit became the spirit of my school. This then was the time when student exchanges took place. Everybody was yearning for peace and good will. Elisabeth Fluegge is my hero and educator. I love her.
