John Hoyland (1934 – 2011) was a British artist known for his abstract paintings, however he did not particularly enjoy being labeled as an abstract artist. In 1964, he had his first solo exhibition at the Marlborough New London Gallery. Hoyland was inspired by fellow artists, Mark Rothko and Robert Motherland, both of whom he met while visiting New York during the 60s. His work is characterized by its vibrant use of color, texture, and depth.
