Richard Hamilton ( 1922–2011 ) was an English painter and collage artist during the Pop Art movement of the 1950s. He was one of the earliest contributors to the movement and his works most likely influenced artists such as Warhol, Lichtenstein, Wesselmann, and Oldenburg. During his career, Hamilton was inspired by Marcel Duchamp and enjoyed exploring art that focused on everyday items and consumer culture. One of his most famous collages, Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?, was created in 1956 and was the first piece of pop art to be recognized in art history for its iconic status.
