Arshile Gorky (1904–1948), born Vostanik Manoug Adoian, was an Armenian painter who strongly influenced the Abstract Expressionist movement. In 1920 he immigrated to the United States after surviving the Armenian Genocide. Sadly, he lost his mother in the process. This tragedy would have a lasting impact on the young artist and his paintings. He has been categorized alongside Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning as one of America’s greatest artists. Towards the end of his career, most of Gorky’s works were heavily inspired by Surrealism and nature.
