Jacques Joseph Tissot, more commonly known as James Tissot (1836 – 1902), was a French painter and illustrator. He is most well known for his genre paintings that depicted women in beautifully rendered clothes. In the late 1850s he traveled to Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. It was not long before he began showing his works within the Paris Salon. Following his service in the Franco-Prussian War, Tissot relocated to London where his paintings became very popular with wealthy British industrialists.
