Adele Bloch-Bauer II by Gustav Klimt is a portrait painting. It was created in 1912 and is currently part of a private collection. In 2006 it was sold for almost $88 million, making it one of the most expensive pieces of art in the world. Adele Bloch-Bauer I beats it in value, though.

Background

Klimt created this painting as requested by Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, who was a wealthy sugar industry tycoon. Adele Bloch-Bauer was Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer’s wife and the only woman who Klimt painted twice.

Appearance

This oil on canvas painting features Adele in the middle, wearing a large black hat and delicate white and blue robes. The background mixes in with what she is wearing, which makes her look like she’s painted right into it. The background has small flowers as well as scenes of war. Purple, violet and blue are the most common colors. The expression on Adele’s face is straight forward and does not show much emotion.
