Vampire was completed in 1895 and was created with oil on canvas. It is a mythological painting styled with expressionism. It is on display at the Munch Museum with Munch’s other works.
Background
Originally titled Love and Pain, this painting was changed to Vampire because an error for critics who were assessing it.
Appearance
Vampire is a very dark painting that has two figures taking up the majority of the space. One is a man with short dark hair while the other is a woman with long red hair. The woman is clearly the vampire, as she has her face and mouth on the neck of the man while he is hunched over. Other than the woman’s face and her arm, you cannot see any other part of her. The background washes out the man, who seems to be wearing black. The woman’s flush cheeks give the feeling of her body filling with blood as she bites down on her victim.
