The Painter of Sunflowers is a piece that was created by Paul Gauguin in 1888. It was created in Arles and is currently housed in the Van Gogh Museum.

Background

When Van Gogh wanted to start an art colony in Arles, he asked Gauguin to join him. During Gauguin’s stay there, he made this painting, but left two months later because of arguments with Van Gogh.

The Painter of Sunflowers is a portrait of Vincent Van Gogh that was painted with oil on canvas. It measures 28.7 by 35.8 inches and has a variety of colors used on it. In the painting Van Gogh is sitting down and painting on a canvas, but it cannot be seen what he is creating. He’s wearing a brown coat with black trim and there is a vase sitting on the table next to him. In the vase are sunflowers as well as other types of flowers. The background has layers of colors that make up the scenery.
