The Madonna del Prato was painted by Raphael, the great Italian artist. It used the medium oil on board and was completed in the year 1505. The dimensions of the painting are one hundred thirteen centimetres by eighty centimetres. The literal translation of the painting in English is Madonna of the Meadow. There are three central figures in the painting which are bonded by their looks and linked hands. The blue mantle on the Virgin Mary is symbolic of the Church while the red one is symbolic of the death of Jesus. There is also a poppy which could be symbolic of Jesus’ suffering, death & resurrection.
