Alexander Calder (July 22, 1898 – November 11, 1976) was an American sculptor who is famous for being the innovator of the mobile, a kinetic sculpture that is delicately balanced or suspended. It is designed to move with the airflow or when gently touched and sometimes by motor power. He also produced stationary sculptures known as stabiles. Calder came from an artistic background, his father was a sculptor and his mother was a painter. Some of Calder’s earliest sculptures were created as a child, small gifts for his parents carefully crafted out of a brass sheet. Calder was also known for his miniature circus, created out of found materials. He enjoyed making jewelry for his friends and even designed many stage sets for theater. Calder was no doubt a very eclectic and skilled artist.
