Patrick Demarchelier is a famous French fashion photographer. He is known for working with some of the biggest publications in the world as well as working with some of the most well-known companies, including Cutty Sark, Calvin Klein, and Revlon, among many others.

Early Life

Patrick Demarchelier was born on August 21, 1943, near Paris. He actually spent his childhood years in Le Havre together his mother and four siblings. For his 17th birthday, he received a camera from his stepfather. He learned how to develop a film, retouch the negatives, and he even started shooting friends and some weddings.

In 1975, he left Paris to go to New York to catch up with his girlfriend. In New York, he discovered the beauty of fashion photography while working as freelance photographer. He also learned about the craft by working with other photographers such as Terry King, Henri Bresson, and Jacque Guilbert. Patrick’s work got the interest of magazines like Elle, 20 Ans and Marie Claire.

Early Career and Personal Life

Patrick Demarchelier also worked for Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. He started in September of 1992 and ended up creating a 12-year collaboration with those publications. Patrick has shot many international campaigns for Celine, Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, TAG Heuer, Lacoste, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein.

Patrick has stayed in New York since 1975. He married Mia and together, the couple has 3 kids. Since late the 1970s, he has been shooting covers for almost each major fashion magazine, including Vogue (the Paris, British and American editions), Glamour, Rolling Stone, Elle, Life, Newsweek and Mademoiselle.

He has also photographed numerous advertising campaigns such as Farrah Fawcett shampoo (1978), Lauren by the Ralph Lauren, Lancome, Revlon, Gianfranco Ferre, GAP, Chanel and Gianni Versace.

A Flourishing Career

Patrick Demarchelier has photographed celebrities such as Brooke Shields, Cindy Crawford, Michael Douglas, Mariel Hemingway and Dustin Hoffman. His photographs are admired for their realism and spontaneity. His photos are on the record album covers of stars like Mariah Carey, Madonna, Elton John and Quincy Jones. His commercial clients include cosmetic companies, exclusive retailers and designers. His first book was published in 1989 and another collection of his photos was published in 1995.

Patrick was also the first non-British photographer to be invited to take photos of the royal family. His photos of the late Princess Diana with her kids appeared for the first time in the December 1989 British Vogue issue.

Other Projects

Patrick DemarchelierPartrick Demarchelier was a primary photographer for a book called On Your Own. This is a beauty guide book written for young girls by Brooke Shields. Drom 1992, Demarchelier has worked with Harper’s Bazaar, becoming the publicatin’s the premier photographer. Throughout his career, he has catapulted careers of several make-up artists such as Jason Marks, Laura Mercier and Pat McGrath.

Patrick appears in a documentary called The September Issue, which is a documentary of Anna Wintour and the American version of Vogue. This happened when he was called upon to do the last-minute photos for Grace Coddington just after Edward Enniful was not sufficient.

He has also appeared in a cameo of a film – Sex the City. Here, he is seen taking photos during Carrie Bradshaw’s fashion shot for Vogue magazine. In episode six of the 15th season of America’s Next Top Model, Patrick is also featured prominently. In March of 2013, The Guardian listed him as one amongst the 50 best-dressed over 50 year old.
