Many art critics regard this oil painting as classic Raphael painting – depicting the life of the Messiah. It was created between the years 1516 to 1517 as an altarpiece.
The painting tells the story of Jesus slipping to a road on his way to Golgotha while carrying the cross where he would be crucified to death. The artwork is seen filled with emotions as if watching a drama but one could also notice how Raphael contrasted this sad scene including the Virgin Mother suffering and weeping from severe emotional pain by using warm and light coloring of the picture. The long road to the site of crucifixion was further emphasized by increasing the density of the images at the lower portion of the picture while keeping the top which shows the mountain, almost empty.
